Marcela II, 72" x 40", oil on linen 2017 Marcela Marcela II, 72" x 40", oil on linen 2017

Marcela II is from my Gaze series, painted between 2014-2019. The last image here is the 24"x12" study for Marcela II.

Throughout this series, I painted one or two studies prior to painting each larger scale work. I don't do this in quite the same way anymore, but found it to be a very helpful process then, and enjoy the "minature" paintings that came out of it.

Both available; DM for inquiries.

Excerpts from lesson 2 of "Painting Nova", a nearly 8-hour (!!) course that follows the progression of my 65" x 45" oil painting, Nova, from start to finish.

In Lesson 2, Painting the Study, you'll learn how and why to paint a study. It's a step that I really enjoy, despite the extra time it takes, because it's so helpful in visualizing the final painting. It also becomes a reference in its own right, which makes it easier to be less reliant on a photo reference (if that's what you're working from).

Excerpts from Lesson 4 in my 9-part course Charcoal Shading: Understanding Values and Form

Value is the lightness or darkness of a colour. Understanding values and form is the key to making your drawings and paintings look three dimensional. When learning about shading, the first step is to learn how to accurately perceive values. Start with simple greyscale exercises to train your eye to see and compare values.

Excerpts from lesson 4 of my 7-part course, "Paint as Flesh: Secrets to Painting the Illusion of Skin".

Learn how how to create realistic skintones and flesh with oil paint. Using effective, expressive brushwork is a huge part of painting, resulting in believable flesh, clear colour, and interesting mark-making. Work WITH the texture of paint to create beautiful figurative paintings.

This course is one of my favourites, because it covers all the elements that go into creating realistic skin tones in oil paint. Learn about form, colour theory, colour temperature, brushwork, colour harmony, and more in the full course.
