Astral Plane is an ongoing series of paintings tha Astral Plane is an ongoing series of paintings that use the concept of floating and weightlessness to explore themes of aimlessness, connection, and seeking an anchor in the unknown. I return to these imaginary spaces during times of transition, uncertainty, and doubt, as a way to move forward and gain clarity.

Welcome to this full-length, start to finish oil painting demonstration! In this demo, you'll see the process of painting a figure on 12" x 9" gesso and oil primed watercolour paper. The first hour and fifteen minutes are narrated, and last ~20 minutes are without narration.

This is a loosely structured, mostly unscripted narration, where you'll hear about the materials and technique, the concept and philosophy, my approach to this subject matter, and more.

The wonderful model for this painting is artist Mel Calabria (https://www.instagram.com/melcalabria/), whom I met while on residence at the Pouch Cove Foundation (https://www.pouchcove.org/). She is an incredible figurative oil painter - be sure to take a look at her work.

I also referenced Adrienne Stein in this video - here is her website: https://www.adriennestein.com/

If you enjoy painting demonstrations like this, visit my online atelier nicolesleethatelier.com, where there are more videos like this, including structured courses, videos on studio skills such as priming and varnishing, and more. I also offer coaching/mentorship if you're looking for feedback, support, and guidance (https://nicolesleethatelier.com/register/art-coaching-and-support/).

I'm happy to answer any questions in the comments.

Enjoy!!

When painting detail, it helps to have a steady hand, but sometimes we need a little help. Here are a few tips for keeping your hand steady while painting.

Also, it is possible to gain more dexterity and steadiness with practice! Fine motor skills are not (always) something we are born with, but a skill that can be improved with conscious effort to steady your hand while painting, barring impediments from physical or medical conditions of course.

This video is an excerpt from my "Painting in Colour For Beginners" course, a 7-part self-paced course intended for oil painters who have never painted in colour before, or want to learn a more structured approach. I'm in a temporary studio for a few months, without my easel, and needed a wall to staples my canvases onto in order to paint. Here's a look at my current setup, with an explanation of how the wall is constructed, and things I would do differently next time.

I thought this might be helpful for any other artists who are in a similar situation, or are looking to build a painting wall in their studio. It was probably about $200 of supplies, and took a day to build once I figured out the general plan and put together the materials list.

In this demo, you'll see the first and second pass on the eyes and nose of "Nova", a 65" x 45" oil painting. During the video, I talk about the difference between the first and second pass (and my approach to both), as well as how to create a sense of form by interrupting the contour.

If you enjoy this demo, the entire painting process (7 hours and 48 minutes of video!) is available here: https://nicolesleethatelier.com/register/painting-nova/

Colours used:
Gamblin Titanium White
Gamblin Transparent Earth Red
Williamsburg Permanent Crimson
Gamblin Cadmium Red Light
Gamblin Raw Sienna
Gamblin Cadmium Lemon
Gamblin Phthalo Green
Williamsburg Ultramarine Blue

In the second pass section, there are a few small clips missing, meaning you'll see changes to the painting without my actually painting them. Sorry about this! I don't have access to my original footage at the moment so I can't fix it right now but I hope it isn't too disruptive.

If you have any questions please leave them in the comments. Enjoy!
