Welcome to painting "Replenish"! I've been working on small studies a lot lately, and wanted to share some of that process, along with the benefits of working with studies.

In the full video, available at https://nicolesleethatelier.com/courses/painting-replenish/, I share my perspective on the value of studies, different mindsets to help you find your artistic voice, and my personal journey at this point in time. Kick back for virtual “studio visit” with this relaxed discussion on an experimental approach to painting.

Painting an oil study - the value of learning from studies
YouTube Video UCwfz7pMXFFr_lOiJeQHU8iw_LUuDGhBXHac
I'm in a temporary studio for a few months, without my easel, and needed a wall to staples my canvases onto in order to paint. Here's a look at my current setup, with an explanation of how the wall is constructed, and things I would do differently next time.

I thought this might be helpful for any other artists who are in a similar situation, or are looking to build a painting wall in their studio. It was probably about $200 of supplies, and took a day to build once I figured out the general plan and put together the materials list.

If you have any questions let me know in the comments!

I often use a high chroma underpainting in my work, enjoying the "energy" it gives the painting. Learn about why to use a vibrant colour for your underpainting/imprimatura, and how to navigate some of the challenges it presents.

In this demo, you'll see the first and second pass on the eyes and nose of "Nova", a 65" x 45" oil painting. During the video, I talk about the difference between the first and second pass (and my approach to both), as well as how to create a sense of form by interrupting the contour.

If you enjoy this demo, the entire painting process (7 hours and 48 minutes of video!) is available here: https://nicolesleethatelier.com/register/painting-nova/

Colours used:
Gamblin Titanium White
Gamblin Transparent Earth Red
Williamsburg Permanent Crimson
Gamblin Cadmium Red Light
Gamblin Raw Sienna
Gamblin Cadmium Lemon
Gamblin Phthalo Green
Williamsburg Ultramarine Blue

In the second pass section, there are a few small clips missing, meaning you'll see changes to the painting without my actually painting them. Sorry about this! I don't have access to my original footage at the moment so I can't fix it right now but I hope it isn't too disruptive.

If you have any questions please leave them in the comments. Enjoy!

When creating an oil painting, colour can be applied in "pieces", like a mosaic, to demonstrate a richer, more realistic effect. This colour mixing exercise is a fantastic learning experience for beginner painters, or anyone who wants to improve their approach to colour.

These excerpts from "Painting in Colour for Beginners - Lesson 2: Colour Mixing Exercises" show the process of mixing a colour, and how to focus on different areas of your subject.

If you enjoy this, you might like the in-depth 47-minute lesson, which is part of a 4-hour online painting course that takes you from zero colour experience to completing a still life painting in full colour.
