All About Colour

This course will help you understand oil paint colour more thoroughly, match colours more efficiently, choose effective pigments for your goals, and merge conceptual and perceptual colour.

Through a series of discussions, demonstrations, and exercises, you will gain knowledge in topics such as the colour wheel, properties of colour (hue, chroma, and value) and how they relate to one another, colour temperature, direct and indirect painting, colour charts, and expressive colour choices.

Welcome to All About Colour! Through a series of discussions and exercises, you’ll learn how to better understand and work with your oil colours.

Lesson 1: Colour Theory

The first step is to learn about the colour wheel, the three characteristics of colour (hue, value, and chroma), and colour temperature.

Lesson 2: Pigments and Colour Charts

What do organic and inorganic pigments mean for your palette selection? Gain an in-depth understanding of each of your pigments through colour charts.

Lesson 3: Mixing Colour

Work through one of the best exercises for learning how to mix oil paint colours accurately, with a step-by-step method using the hue, value, and chroma.

Lesson 4: Colour Temperature

Colour temperature in light is hugely important – it affects the colour of everything we see. Learn about warm and cool lights, colour harmony, and practice through a demonstrated exercise.

Lesson 5: Glazing and Scumbling

The majority of the course focuses on a direct painting approach to colour. Learn about indirect methods such as glazing and scumbling.

Lesson 6: Expression Through Colour

In this last lesson, sit back and relax for a guided tour through 12 of Nicole’s favourite examples of expressive colour in painting. Learn about prioritizing hue, value, or chroma, and how to balance the three characteristics with examples from true masters.
